I love black bean burgers! For the longest time, I believed making them would be too much of a challenge, so I would only enjoy them while out at a restaurant. When I finally decided to make them at home, I was surprised by how easy they were to make! Plus, they are so delicious from scratch. Since I started making these at home, I no longer gravitate towards them at restaurants.

If you are a meat-lover thinking that black bean burgers are not for you, please give this one a try! Black bean burgers are not just for vegetarians! They pack so much flavor, I promise you’ll enjoy them, and their nutritious value is hard to beat. These black bean burger patties will make you forget you ever wanted a traditional hamburger! My husband, lover of all things bacon and meat-lover pizzas, loves these burgers!

We put these black bean burger patties on hamburger buns and load it with our favorite toppings. For an extra flavor kick, make some chipotle mayo by combining some diced chipotle peppers in adobo sauce and mayo. My husband and I typically serve these with either fries, corn on the cob, salad, or grilled mixed veggies.

These black bean burgers will keep for several days in the refrigerator. Simply throw them on the griddle or skillet to heat back up before building your burger.

Ingredients

  • 1 15 oz can black beans, (I use low-sodium black beans)
  • 1/2 onion, chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 cup oats
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp hot sauce, (or to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp dried cilantro
  • 1 tbsp cumin
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup frozen corn kernels, thawed
  • 8 buns
  • favorite burger toppings: cheese, lettuce, tomato, chipotle mayo

Method

  • 1)

Drain and rinse the black beans. Dry the beans with a paper towel then transfer to a medium bowl. While drying the beans, I squish them slightly before placing them in the bowl. Then using a fork, I continue to mash them. I like a bit of texture, so I leave some beans mostly whole.

  • 2)

In a food processor, pulse together the onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Add the oats and pulse until finely chopped. Then add the egg, hot sauce, cilantro, cumin, and salt. Pulse until combined.

  • 3)

Transfer the contents of the food processor to the bowl with the mashed black beans. Add corn kernels. Mix well to combine.

  • 4)

Heat skillet or griddle over medium-high heat and spray with cooking spray.

  • 5)

Using a quarter cup measuring cup, scoop out the black bean mixture and place onto the greased skillet or griddle. Using the back of the measuring cup, gently squish the mixture into a rounded flat patty.

  • 6)

Cook the first side until golden brown. Approximately 8 minutes. Flip and cook the other side for an additional 5 minutes or until cooked through.

  • 7)

    Build your burgers and enjoy!
