Homemade Rolls

December 10, 2020Amanda

Is anyone else intimidated by making homemade bread? I have made dessert breads like banana bread or zucchini bread for years, but only recently dove into more traditional breads. This recipe is my first time using active-dry yeast and while I was initially nervous about messing it up, the rolls turned out perfectly! And, oh my goodness did these make the house smell great!

This recipe is great for anyone who is new to making bread. Plus, the rolls are very versatile. We used more than half of these rolls as slider buns, others as garlic rolls, and then the rest as simple, butter rolls.

For the sliders, we sliced the rolls in half, spread some honey Dijon mustard on the slices, then topped with ham and cheese. Delicious! They were perfect for lunch. For the garlic rolls, we mixed garlic salt and melted butter together, then spread over the top of the rolls. Consider pairing these with my Goat Cheese Lasagna Roll-ups!

These rolls will keep in the refrigerator, covered, for about a week. To reheat, simply put in the oven for 5 minutes at 350℉.

Homemade Rolls

  • Total time: 1 hour
  • Serves: 15

These quick, made-from-scratch, rolls are the perfect addition to family dinner night or a quick lunch. They are absolutely delicious!

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp active-dry yeast
  • 3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour, (plus extra for hands)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1-2 tbsp melted butter, for brushing on top
  • additional seasonings, (optional)

Method

  • 1)

Pre-heat your oven to 400℉. Coat a 9 x 13 baking dish with cooking spray and set aside.

  • 2)

In a 2-cup glass measuring cup or microwave safe bowl, melt butter. Once melted add the water, milk, and honey. Stir until combined. Heat in microwave for 1 minute then check temperature. Liquid mixture should be about 110℉. Pour mixture into the bowl of a stand mixer.

  • 3)

Measure the active-dry yeast exactly. Sprinkle the yeast evenly on top of the liquid mixture. Stir briefly to combine. Wait 5 minutes. During this time, the yeast will activate and it will become foamy.

  • 4)

Add in the flour and salt into the mixing bowl. Using the dough hook on low speed, mix the ingredients until combined and the dough is smooth. This process takes about 3-5 minutes.

  • 5)

Coat a medium-sized bowl with cooking spray. Sprinkle some flour onto your hands (this helps the dough not stick) and transfer the dough from the mixing bowl to the coated medium-sized bowl.

  • 6)

Completely cover the bowl with a damp paper towel. Let the dough rest for 15 minutes. The dough will rise during this time.

  • 7)

After the 15 minutes has passed, gently punch and fold the dough into itself about 5-7 times. Then pinch off chunks of dough, roll into balls, and place into prepared baking dish. Each roll is just over 2 inches in diameter. Once the 15 rolls are placed, cover the dish for 20 minutes with a damp paper towel.

  • 8)

Remove the paper towel and bake for 15 minutes. The rolls will become lightly golden brown on the top and sides.

  • 9)

Immediately after baking, brush the tops with melted butter. Consider adding different seasonings to the butter like garlic salt, parsley or rosemary.

  • 10)

    Pull apart and enjoy!
