Sweet Serrano Chili Sauce

January 3, 2022Amanda

In full disclosure, this sauce was actually made 6 months ago, in July. I had most of this post ready to go at that time, but come August, things became extra challenging for my family and I stopped having any time to update this blog. Thankfully, I had this recipe saved and can now share it with you! Better late than never…

When I made this sauce it was 90+ degrees and my jalapeno and serrano pepper plants were thriving. I had zero idea what to do with all these hot peppers! While searching for ideas, I kept finding sweet chili sauces, but none were made with serrano peppers. Since I had so many serrano peppers, I thought it was worth experimenting with and I am very glad I did!

This homemade Sweet Serrano Chili Sauce has amazing flavor. The sauce was so fresh, it will be hard to ever use store bought chili sauces again. We dipped egg rolls and crab Rangoon in the sauce. We tossed meatballs and chicken in the sauce as well as used it in some pasta dishes. I even think my husband used it on his breakfast burritos!

If you like sweet chili sauces, give this homemade version a try! It makes a lot, so feel free to use it on everything!

Sweet Serrano Chili Sauce

This sauce will be your new favorite addition to always have on hand. It brings the heat with a hint of sweet.

Ingredients

  • 3-5 Serrano peppers, chopped
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1.5 cups water
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

Instructions

  • 1)

Using a food processer, add chopped serrano peppers, sugar, garlic, salt, 1.5 cups water, and vinegar. Secure lid and pulse until peppers are diced and ingredients are mixed well.

  • 2)

In a separate bowl, whisk together the 1/4 cup water and cornstarch to make a slurry.

  • 3)

Transfer contents of food processor to a sauce pan and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce mixture to low. Let the mixture simmer for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally. The peppers will soften and the mixture will begin to thicken.

  • 4)

Pour the cornstarch slurry into the sauce pan with the pepper mixture. Stir well. Bring contents to a boil and let boil for 1 minute.

  • 5)

Remove from heat and let cool completely before transferring to a container for storage. (I used a mason jar.) Store in the fridge until ready to use. It will keep fresh for several weeks.

  • 6)

When ready to use, dip, toss, or spread it onto your favorite dishes! Enjoy!
