My family loves pizza! We love it so much, that it was actually our wedding meal! We hired an amazing wood-fired pizza food truck to serve up fresh-made pizzas. If you are in Wisconsin, look up Hearthside Chariot!

Since we cannot hire Hearthside Chariot every week and we do not always want to pay for take-out, we often make pizzas at home. This particular dish is perfect comfort food for any night of the week. It is easy and one kids would enjoy helping to make. You can easily switch up the ingredients to make different varieties. Instead of sausage, consider beef or omit the meat and load up on veggies.

One slice makes a meal for us, but it can also be paired with a nice side salad. If the 500 calories does not work into your health goals, drop the cheese to 4 ounces and replace the sausage with a leaner meat or vegetable.

Easy comfort food that is fun to make and delicious to eat without the calories of take-out!

Ingredients

  • 11 oz can refrigerated pizza crust, I use Pillsbury Thin Crust
  • 1 lb ground mild Italian sausage
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 1/2 onion, diced
  • 1 jalapeno, diced, optional
  • 15 oz can tomato sauce
  • 24 slices Boar's Head turkey pepperoni
  • 6 oz shredded cheese
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp oregano

Instructions

  • 1)

Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • 2)

Prepare a 9 x 13 inch baking dish by spraying the bottom and sides with cooking spray. Set aside.

  • 3)

Heat a large skillet to medium-high heat. Add the ground Italian sausage to the skillet, breaking up into your preferred size. Cook through. Add diced green pepper, onion, garlic, and jalapeno to skillet. Stir together and cook until veggies soften. Stir in the tomato sauce and simmer until sauce thickens. About 5 minutes.

  • 4)

While sauce thickens, unroll the pizza dough and gently stretch it across the baking dish, pressing the dough down across the bottom of the dish and up the sides about 1-2 inches high.

  • 5)

Pour sausage mixture onto the dough, spreading evenly. Place the pepperoni in 4 x 8 rows. Sprinkle the shredded cheese over the pepperoni. Top with oregano.

  • 6)

Bake for 20 mins or until the crust is golden brown. Remove from oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

The pizza at your reception was AMAZING! Charlie and I chatted with the pizza guys after dinner, and they were so nice. And, of course, your wedding was amazing too!
